The GRIMM Shows

The hit, award winning shows “Grimm!” “Grimm, Too!” "Très Grimm!" The shows take a close look at the true tales, not the sanitized ones we know today. They also trace the rich history of folk tales. Developed, co-written, and produced by George Larkin. Twenty-two writers, twenty-one directors, sixteen musicians, and sixty actors in all helped create all new adaptations of the stories.

Combined, the shows were nominated for nine prestigious L.A. Weekly Awards and received three Backstage West honorable mention Garlands. The first show was a Backstage West Critic’s Pick, all three were recommended by the L.A. Weekly, and the Los Angeles Times recommended the third and raved that "George Larkin's third slate of adult takes on tales by folklore's cautionary brothers is a vivacious volume earmarked by wry designs and spry playing...", "Grown up Grimm pulls no punches," and that its "vicious and hysterical," hilarious," "riveting," and that its "energy abounds"

They've also been showcases for new writers.

For example, there were a total of five people nominated for Best Writing in a One Act in 2003. Three were from "Grimm, Too!." And we were up against Ray Bradbury –- yes, that Ray Bradbury. For our writers:

• Bryan Davidson – his first professional production. His next play, "War Music," won numerous awards (including an Ovation Award for best World Premiere play) and later played at the Geffen Theatre.

• Scott Tobis – not only his first professional production, but also the first play he HAD EVER written.

• Ruth Silveira – it was not her first professional production. That came when she wrote a play in the first “Grimm!” show.

• For Wayne Liebman, who received a Backstage West honorable mention Garland for his writing, it was his first professional production, too.

So Grimm welcomed and developed the work of experienced AND new writers.

That same year, two of the five people nominated for Best Director from a one-act show were from "Grimm, Too!" as well.

After an open submission process, we had a selection process of several meetings and readings, allowing writers a chance to hear and then revise their work before the final show was picked.

Apart from our evening shows, we also took the family friendly part of the shows and put on free shows for families in our neighborhood – Rampart. We sent out bilingual people into the neighborhood to invite them, and they turned up in the hundreds! For many of them, it was the first time they’d ever even seen a play.
