Seeking: Short plays, stories,
and poems by Iraqi writers. Mostly, but not entirely, by writers
living in Iraq now. The
pieces can be extremely short (even a few lines) or take up to
thirty minutes to perform.
Language: We want writing in English. That way the writer gets
to tell his or her own story in the language we’re going
to present it in.
The show: This material is for a stage play. We will take 8-10
of the plays and poems and put then into a two-hour stage show
for at least a six run in Los Angeles.
What the plays/ poems should be about:
I'm looking to produce a theatre show of a collection of short
pieces, mainly being short plays but possibly including other
forms of expression including songs and dance, about the events
leading to this current war, stories of the war, and/ or the
current aftermath.
Frankly, what I'm looking to do is to give audiences here stories
of the war and its aftermath -- stories we're not getting from
our media or government. I'm not looking to do a specifically
pro or anti war play. I just want to let long quiet writers tell
their stories, be they dark or light.
It can be about soldiers. Or lovers. Or families. Or children.
Whatever you want.
Philosophy of the project:
This is not specifically intended to be a political piece but
the pieces can be very political if you want. I am simply looking
to do two things: to show a U.S. audience what the effect (both
good and bad) of the current war is and to give long silenced
Iraqi writers a production of their work in a Los Angeles.
The pieces can be happy or sad. Serious or fun.
